Our Approach

Since clients’ concerns are top priority, each client matter is assigned to one senior lawyer who personally oversees budget, staffing, strategy, planning, communications and outcome.

Litigation Practice

There are 12 trial lawyers and litigators in the San Francisco office. These lawyers handle a wide variety of cases throughout California and in many other jurisdictions involving antitrust, business torts, class actions, contracts, construction, environmental, intellectual property, insurance coverage, products liability, real estate, securities, and unfair business practices and competition. The trial lawyers and litigators in the San Francisco office are supported by an additional 60 trial lawyers and litigators firmwide. Our breadth and depth of experience and expertise provides a ready capability to handle large and complex litigation, and our emphasis on client service delivers value and efficiency.

Real Estate, Development Land Use and Financing

There are six lawyers in the San Francisco office working with a firmwide real estate, development, land use, and financing practice group of more than 20 lawyers offering the full spectrum of matters involving commercial real estate, including the purchase, development, finance, leasing, and disposition of a wide variety of industrial, commercial, and residential properties, from large-scale industrial facilities, to Brownfields developments, to office buildings, to environmentally significant coastal ranches, to multi-site mixed commercial and retail establishments, and to residential subdivisions. Lawyers in the San Francisco office also handle the full range of land use entitlements and issues, including general and specific plan amendments, development permits, and agreements, CEQA, and Endangered Species Act issues, entitlements arising under the Base Realignment and Closure Act (“BRAC”), and issues pertaining to land-secured finance districts. The group also has expertise in matters involving railroad property, fiber optics, pipelines, the real estate aspects of project finance and land-secured finance districts, including Mello-Roos, assessment, and landscape maintenance districts. Where necessary, the firm's real estate lawyers coordinate all of these activities with lawyers in the other departments of the firm, including the environmental department, in order to achieve an efficient and integrated approach to each project.

Environmental

HRO has built a team of over 20 lawyers committed to serving clients worldwide with every conceivable need in the environmental area, including regulatory compliance and permitting matters, transactions involving environmental issues, and environmental litigation. Lawyers in the San Francisco office have handled the management and disposition of impaired real property, including Brownfields redevelopment, the acquisition and conservation of sensitive habitats, and the full range of land use entitlements and issues, including general and specific plan amendments, development agreements, CEQA, and Endangered Species Act issues, entitlements arising under the BRAC, and issues pertaining to landsecured finance districts. The San Francisco office also has expertise in handling environmental coverage matters and actions arising under CERCLA, CEQA, the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and state hazardous substance laws.

Media, Information, and Intellectual Property

Holme Roberts & Owen LLP has an interdisciplinary group of lawyers with experience assisting publishers of print, broadcast, and online media in their efforts to obtain and disseminate information. With several former journalists among our lawyers, we bring our knowledge and appreciation for the media industry to bear in providing thoughtful advice and representation on a variety of problems facing those who gather and disseminate information. In addition, our lawyers are experienced in copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property matters, enabling us to provide our clients with thorough guidance on the full range of content-related issues that face today’s publishers.

Labor & Employment

HRO's labor and employment attorneys, including lawyers in the San Francisco office, assist clients with personnel policies, employment contracts, job applications, and other employment forms, help employers investigate employee misconduct, including sexual harassment, and regularly advise clients on employee discipline and termination. HRO lawyers counsel employers on federal and state wage and hour laws and assist them in understanding and complying with the leave requirements of the Family Medical Leave Act and Americans with Disabilities Act. They regularly represent employers in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies in lawsuits involving the full spectrum of employment law claims, including wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, breach of contract, trade secrets, and defamation
