The Holme Roberts & Owen LLP Salt Lake City office was established in 1980 in order to better serve clients in Utah and the surrounding region. Our Salt Lake office has more than 45 lawyers representing clients locally, nationally and internationally in a wide range of business, commercial, financial, employment, tax, legislative and litigation matters.
We are closely linked to each of the firm's other offices. Our computer and telephone networks allow us to draw upon the resources of one of the oldest and largest law firms in the Rocky Mountain Region, and to provide our clients with immediate access to the experience and knowledge of more than 265 lawyers throughout the firm.

Our Clients
The Salt Lake City office serves a broad range of local, national and international clients, including established businesses, professional and nonprofit organizations, trade groups and individuals.
Litigation
The office's largest practice area is litigation. Our litigation attorneys have extensive experience at both the trial and appellate levels in federal and state courts throughout the United States. This experience includes representation in commercial, employment, banking, securities, environmental, bankruptcy, contract, intellectual property, antitrust, constitutional, insurance and construction matters, as well as other types of complex litigation.
Our litigation section has the capabilities for handling virtually any case, large or small. Our attorneys recently defeated claims in excess of $500,000,000 and prevailed on counterclaims for our client in excess of $110,000,000 in a dispute between two energy companies. In addition, we were lead counsel to a 9,000 member class in Utah's largest class action proceeding and recovered in excess of $50 million on behalf of the class. Our attorneys also led a successful defense in a mine fire litigation, one of the largest cases ever tried in Utah.
In addition to providing representation in court proceedings, we also assist clients in arbitration, mediation and other types of alternative dispute resolution.
Corporate
We assist our clients in a variety of commercial matters that arise in connection with the organization and operation of businesses throughout their development cycle. Our business attorneys have extensive experience in debt and equity financings. We work with our clients in planning, structuring and implementing all types of transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, sales of assets, joint ventures, corporate reorganizations, and creation of stock incentive plans. We were heavily involved in the drafting of the Utah Revised Business Corporation Act, and are adept at structuring corporate organizations and transactions in compliance with its provisions. As the authors of Utah's Limited Liability Company and Limited Liability Partnership Acts, we are effectively using these entities for the benefit of our clients in a variety of settings.
Federal, State and Local Taxation
Our tax department advises clients with respect to state, local, federal, and international tax issues. Our clients look to us for assistance in planning, structuring, and carrying out transactions and business operations in order to achieve the most beneficial tax position. As avenues for international expansion have widened, we have focused substantial attention on international tax structuring, especially with respect to Canadian, Mexican and European operations. Additionally, we provide quality representation to clients involved in disputes of all types with the Internal Revenue Service and the State Tax Commission.
Another prominent area of our practice is the representation of both business and utility clients with respect to state and local income, sales and property tax issues arising from transactions and holdings throughout the United States. We provide representation at all levels of the administrative and judicial review process, as well as assistance in seeking solutions through changes in legislation.
Intellectual Property Litigation Practice
The intellectual property litigation practice at Holme Roberts & Owen LLP (HRO) is dedicated to assisting our clients in protecting all aspects of their intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and other intellectual property.
Our IP trial lawyers have experience in a wide range of industries and technologies, including computer peripherals and software, electronics, biotechnology, medical products, cable television, mechanical devices, environmental remediation and scientific instruments, as well as in all aspects of the entertainment industry, including music, literature, sports and video entertainment. We have handled matters for clients in virtually every substantive area of the intellectual property practice, and we have represented these clients at local, regional and national levels, as well as in various international tribunals and on appeal. We also have extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation.

Employment and Labor
Our office's employment and labor practice involves all areas of employment-related advice and litigation. Clients look to us for counsel to ensure compliance with the increasingly complex body of federal and state regulation governing employer/employee relations, including all varieties of prohibited discrimination as well as advice regarding protected leave, polygraph testing, drug testing, layoffs and terminations, minimum wage, overtime and child labor. We assist clients in the preparation of employee handbooks and policies and in the training of their personnel to avoid practices which can lead to violations and lawsuits. We also provide assistance with federal Department of Labor audits, state administrative investigations and ERISA disputes.
Our international employment lawyers have assisted U.S. clients with foreign operations in international employment and labor law issues as well as technology issues related to employees.
Our employment litigation practice focuses primarily on the defense of employers in claims relating to wrongful termination, discrimination and the variety of federal and state regulations referenced above and have experience advising clients in matters arising under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) including unfair labor practices and collective bargaining.
Water, Natural Resource and Environmental
We have extensive experience in water, natural resources and energy law, including water rights, acquisitions, transfers and maintenance; extensive knowledge and familiarity with the historical development of water rights in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and other western drainages; environmental mitigation planning; environmental remediation and rehabilitation; and energy generation permitting and compliance.
Our environmental practice group appear frequently before the departments of air and water quality and have experience in defending clients in environmental lawsuits and insurance coverage matters relating to such lawsuits throughout the nation.
Real Estate
We maintain an active real estate practice and provide quality representation for our clients in both complex and routine real estate transactions. Our attorneys have extensive experience in such areas as commercial leasing, zoning and other land use issues, acquisitions and sales, residential and commercial development, real estate secured financings, and environmental issues affecting real estate.
Financial Institutions
We serve as local counsel for a number of financial institutions and lenders. Our involvement includes structuring, negotiating and documenting commercial loans, advising and reviewing documents in connection with consumer lending programs, reviewing operating procedures for compliance with federal and state law, providing advice regarding trust administration, estate, sales and property tax matters, and representing clients in complex litigation, bankruptcy and collateral foreclosure matters.
Government Relations
We have an extensive practice representing local and national clients before government bodies, including the Utah Legislature and Utah administrative agencies.
