What Our First Year Associates Say About HRO

"'Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort...' You CAN have a great career at a top tier law firm while having a GREAT life as well. It takes a discipline and a delicate balance between detailed planning and flexibility, but it can be done. Since I have started with HRO I have worked with large clients that have a national scope to successful Colorado business persons. I have worked one-on-one with our clients to assess their needs, explain the legal consequences of their alternatives, assist them in making their business decisions, and then negotiating with other attorneys to meet our client's objectives. I have also worked with other attorneys as a team on larger projects. This morning I received a call from a person who was referred to me; he asked me to represent him as his attorney. So, with the supervision of a partner in my practice group, I am able to bring my own clients into the firm. During this time, I have skied (a lot), mountain biked (some), and made trips to visit friends and family. That is not to say that I have not changed plans and adapted my personal life to work and vice versa, but all-in-all it has worked out. This summer, I hope to continue to develop my legal drafting skills, become involved with more land use projects, improve my fly fishing cast, and become a better putter. Life is good."

"Having moved to Denver from outside of Colorado, HRO has been a great resource for helping me get acquainted with the metro Denver community. As a long-established Denver law firm, HRO is integrated into the business community and finds its attorneys widely involved in the nonprofit community. HRO takes an interest in helping their young associates find organizations and opportunities for involvement outside of their work for the firm."

"I appreciate being trusted to interact with clients directly and getting opportunities early to help analyze and draft agreements. From talking with law school classmates, this experience is not the case in many places. Also, a day rarely goes by during which I don't talk to several or all of the other associates in my practice group. Everyone is willing to pitch in and help each other out."

"There are any number of reasons why it's great to be an associate at HRO -- exciting and challenging work, absolutely top-notch support staff and resources, and a firmwide commitment to fostering a workable balance between career and personal life, just to name a few -- but the primary reason I came to HRO is the quality of the lawyers here, both as professionals and as people. As a young associate entering the legal profession, it's important to learn from skilled and experienced role models, and I feel like I've found that at HRO, both in the form of partners who commit valuable time in a mentoring role and fellow associates who are willing and eager to give their guidance, advice, and support. But perhaps even more importantly, the people at HRO are people with whom I look forward to working with when I come to work each day."
