About the firm

HRO has a tradition of building lasting relationships with Colorado’s finest entrepreneurial pioneers, from railroads and mining, to oil and gas, and more recently the emerging growth companies in technology and telecommunications which are prevalent in today's business environment. Clients are the focus of our firm. We could not exist without them. We seek the best lawyers for one reason - to represent our clients to the best of our ability and provide them with the best legal work possible. Our commitment to client satisfaction is reflected in the high quality of our legal work, client relations, communication skills and unparalleled service.

Our exciting future

At HRO, we are committed to the future. Although we have practiced law since 1898, we do not rest on our laurels. We believe our vision for the future is as important as our history.

In 2006, we unveiled a new promise for service: Experience Listens. Be Heard. We will continue to maintain and enhance our status as one of the dominant firms in the Rocky Mountain region, with a strong national and international presence. We accomplish this through controlled growth to meet our clients’ increasing needs.

Sophisticated practice

As of 2/1/2008, we had 139 attorneys in our Denver office, 17 in Colorado Springs, 46 in Salt Lake City, 7 in Boulder, 2 in London, 19 in San Francisco, 10 in Los Angeles, and 10 in Munich. HRO is organized into practice groups that focus on specific types of legal issues or client concerns. We represent many international, national and regional clients, and our lawyers practice in two major areas – Corporate and Business Transactions and Litigation. Additional practice areas add value and provide support to our clients.

The Denver Community

Denver's climate is spectacular, offering 300 days of sunshine per year and four mild and dry seasons. Denver has all the advantages that major metropolitan areas bring; including five major sports teams, and the second largest performing arts complex in the country, attracting national touring companies, the Colorado Symphony and world-class performances in both classical and popular productions. In addition, Denver supports a major art museum, natural history museum and a multitude of smaller venues. Skiing, hiking, climbing, white water rafting, fishing and camping are all available within a two-hour drive from downtown. Denver is the host to over 60 public golf courses and the largest city park system in the nation coupled with the thousands of acres of open space. In short, no city in the country boasts the rare combination of culture and outdoor activities that make Denver and the Rocky Mountains a favorite destination.

Commitment to our Community

We encourage our attorneys to give back to their communities. We sponsor the Earth Island Institute, Rocky Mountain Children’s Legal Clinic, the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Ronald McDonald House, Arapahoe House, Inc. and the Boys' and Girls' Clubs. Our Community Involvement Committee sponsors a variety of programs and events throughout the year, including the annual Thanksgiving basket food drive, which has resulted in enough food to fill over 1,100 baskets distributed to needy families through Volunteers of America each year since 1985. We also deliver daily hot lunches to the elderly through Meals on Wheels, collect clothing and toiletries that are distributed to homeless shelters, programs for unwed teen mothers, needy children, and the elderly; volunteer for Wilderness on Wheels; and hold an annual school supply and book drive for several local elementary schools.

Commitment to diversity

HRO is one of the original signatories to the Colorado Pledge to Diversity. The Pledge was signed in 1993 and re-vamped in 2000. It is a commitment by some of Denver’s largest law firms to set forth and take steps to meet clear, realistic and attainable goals for the enhancement of racial and ethnic diversity in Colorado law firms.

HRO has participated in the Minority Clerkship Program sponsored by the Pledge Group since 2001, the inaugural year. We have and will continue to support the Pledge. We recognize that improving diversity starts with educational opportunities. In 2005, HRO established the James E. Bye Scholarship which is available to first year law students at each of Colorado’s law schools to assist law students and enable them to focus on their studies.

HRO has a Diversity Committee dedicated to increasing awareness within the firm of diversity issues and increasing success rates in hiring, retaining and advancing women and members of diverse groups. We strive to create a working environment in which each individual is valued and is treated with dignity and respect, and to enhance the firm’s presence in the community with respect to gender and ethnicity issues. The Diversity Committee is a group of multi-ethnic attorneys who meet regularly and informally to lend support to one another and to discuss issues in the legal industry.

In October 2004, HRO was the co-Foundation sponsor of the 8th annual National Latina/Latino Law Student Association Conference held at the University of Denver College of Law. This conference brought together more than 600 participants including law students, professors, speakers and prominent community members from all regions of the country. The conference included workshops, panel discussions, plenary sessions and cultural festivities surrounding topics such as leadership, community service, programming and the law.

In April 2005, HRO was a sponsor of the 37th Annual National Black Law Students Association Convention to be held at the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center. Over 400 students from law schools across the country will join their peers in Denver to honor the work of great legal minds and attend workshops on practical techniques to enrich their future growth and progress.

Diversity is a core value at HRO. Those attorneys who identify with diverse groups based on race, ethnicity or sexual orientation enrich all of us. Over 22% of our partners and 44% of our other attorneys are diverse and 28% of our total attorneys are women. Twelve of our attorneys are members of diverse ethnic groups.
Pro Bono opportunities

HRO is strongly committed to pro bono legal services. Our attorneys represent individual clients through the Denver Bar Association’s Metropolitan Volunteer Lawyer program, the Legal Aid Society, the Faculty of Federal Advocates, the Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center, the American Civil Liberties Union, and serve as Guardians Ad Litem through Denver District Court. We have also been involved in public interest pro bono including environmental litigation for groups such as the Sierra Club and the Land and Water Fund of the Rockies.

A unique and highly competitive compensation system

We have eliminated the traditional lock-step salary system where associates are paid based on their graduation year with no particular regard for special skills, value added or market forces.

We offer a unique, 10-level compensation system. Salaries start at $120,000 in our Colorado and Utah offices and $145,000 in our California offices. In addition, associates may be eligible for a non-discretionary bonus for billing at least 100 hours more than the billing requirement of 1850 hours.

We recognize that part of the successful practice of law is the non-billable time attorneys invest in the firm and their own professional development. At HRO, appropriate investment time, including pro-bono work, community involvement, training, recruiting and client development is expected and may be rewarded through discretionary bonuses.

Training opportunities

Substantive training at HRO is conducted through firmwide training programs and by individual practice groups. Our partners and senior associates view professional development of less-experienced attorneys as their commitment to the future of the firm. They demonstrate this through informal and formal mentoring and through their daily interactions with associates.

Leadership opportunities

At HRO, everyone has a voice. As an associate, you may be a member of one of our standing committees, such as the Hiring Committee, Diversity Committee, or Community Involvement Committee as well as important ad hoc committees. Participating in these committees allows employees to become involved in the decision-making process at an early stage. There are also many opportunities to become involved in the summer program and mentoring of associates.

Firm resources

We equip all of our attorneys with state-of-the-art technology tailored to the specific needs of your practice area. We provide 24/7 administrative support to better assist our legal staff. Our Denver facilities include a large multi-purpose room that converts into a simulated courtroom, conference room or classroom, a media center with state-of-the-art audio and video conferencing capabilities and a fully staffed and equipped law library. Many of our attorneys are provided with PDAs for access to clients and an increased ability to meet their needs in a timely manner.

Hiring Focus

We focus our recruiting efforts on experienced attorneys who can attract and retain high-quality clients while they embody personal traits and qualities such as good judgment, initiative, integrity, resilience/adaptability, team player and, last but not least, dedication and devotion to superior client service.

We understand that our growth and success depend on you. Outstanding, entrepreneurial, client-focused lawyers are the essence of our future. We invite you to explore the opportunities HRO offers and discover the resources, people and work environment that will help ensure your legal career is both rewarding and stimulating.
